Take App

Bluetooth Printing from POS Mobile App

Print order receipts directly from your phone using a Bluetooth LE thermal printer. No computer or Ethernet cable needed — connect your printer and start printing.

Before you start

You'll need:

  • The Take App mobile app installed on your iPhone or Android phone
  • A Bluetooth LE (BLE) printer that supports ESC/POS (see supported printers)
  • Bluetooth enabled on your phone

The app connects to Bluetooth LE printers only. Wi-Fi, LAN, and classic Bluetooth printers aren't supported yet.

Connect your printer

  1. Turn on your Bluetooth LE printer and keep it nearby. Put it in pairing mode if it needs it. Don't pair it in your phone's Bluetooth settings first — the app connects to it directly.
  2. Open the Take App and go to Settings → Printer.
  3. Tap Search for Bluetooth LE printer. The app scans for about 15 seconds.
  4. Find your printer in the results. Recognized printers appear under Printers; everything else, including unnamed devices shown as "Unknown device", appears under Other devices. If your printer isn't under Printers, look under Other devices — you can still select it.
  5. Tap your printer to connect. Once connected, you'll see your printer name with a green "Connected" indicator.

The app remembers your printer and will automatically reconnect next time you open the app.

Permissions

The app needs Bluetooth permissions to find and connect to your printer:

  • iPhone — Bluetooth access is requested automatically. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on in your phone settings.
  • Android 12 and later — The app will ask for Bluetooth Scan and Bluetooth Connect permissions. Tap "Allow" when prompted.
  • Android 11 and earlier — The app will ask for Location permission (required by Android to scan for Bluetooth devices). Tap "Allow" when prompted.

If you accidentally denied permissions, go to your phone's Settings → Apps → Take App → Permissions and enable Bluetooth (or Location for older Android).

Set paper width

After connecting your printer, choose the correct paper width in Settings → Printer:

  • 58mm — Smaller rolls, common with portable printers
  • 80mm — Standard receipt size, common with countertop printers

Check your printer's manual or paper roll packaging if you're unsure which size your printer uses.

  1. Complete an order on the Checkout tab.
  2. On the order confirmation screen, tap Print receipt.

The receipt includes:

  • Store name, address, and contact info
  • Order number and date
  • All line items with options and prices
  • Discounts, tax, and total
  • Amount received and change (for cash payments)

Test print

To verify your printer is working correctly, go to Settings → Printer and tap Test Print. A short test document will print. If nothing prints, check that your printer is turned on and within Bluetooth range.

Disconnect printer

To disconnect your printer, go to Settings → Printer and tap Disconnect. You can set up a different printer at any time.

Troubleshooting

  • Printer not showing in scan list — The app supports Bluetooth LE printers only; Wi-Fi, LAN, and classic Bluetooth printers aren't supported yet. Check under Other devices too — a printer the app doesn't recognize still appears there and can be selected. If the printer is paired in your phone's Bluetooth settings, disconnect it there, then search again. Make sure the printer is on and nearby, and restart it if needed.
  • Permission denied — Go to your phone's Settings → Apps → Take App → Permissions and enable Bluetooth (or Location on older Android).
  • Connection lost — The app will try to reconnect automatically. If it doesn't, go to Settings → Printer and tap Search for Bluetooth LE printer to reconnect.
  • Receipt looks too wide or narrow — Check that the paper width setting matches your printer's paper size (58mm or 80mm).
  • Printing is slow — This can happen if the Bluetooth signal is weak. Move your phone closer to the printer.
